When it comes to choosing the perfect roof lantern for your home, one of the key decisions is whether to opt for a timber-framed or aluminium design. At Just Roof Lanterns, we offer both options, each with its own unique benefits and aesthetic appeal. Here, we break down the key differences to help you make an informed choice.
Timber-Framed Roof Lanterns: Our Classic and Linear collections are crafted from high-quality Sapele hardwood, a durable and stable timber that is painted (sprayed) for a smooth and refined finish. These lanterns feature internal timber rafters with a lambs tongue moulding and aluminium capping externally, combining the beauty of wood with the weather resistance of metal. Timber lanterns are made from engineered solid Sapele, providing a strong and robust structure.
Aluminium Roof Lanterns: Our Urban and Hybrid collections are made entirely of high-grade aluminium, providing a sleek and contemporary aesthetic. Aluminium is naturally resistant to rust, ensuring long-term durability with minimal maintenance. These lanterns are constructed using aluminium extrusions, making them generally lighter structures compared to timber-framed options.
Timber-Framed: Timber lanterns have a traditional and luxurious feel, making them ideal for period properties, heritage homes, or orangeries. While aluminium lanterns can come in a traditional design (in terms of rafter layout), timber roof lanterns are specifically designed to suit period properties and Grade II listed homes. The natural grain of the wood can be finished in a range of colours to suit your décor.
Aluminium: With its slimline profiles and modern finish, aluminium is perfect for contemporary extensions, minimalist interiors, and modern architecture. The ability to create large glass panels with minimal framing allows for maximum natural light.
Timber Lanterns: The Classic range features additional rafters, while the Linear range has a more minimalistic design with fewer rafters. Each timber rafter is 45mm wide.
Aluminium Lanterns: The Urban and Hybrid ranges feature strong yet slim rafters, offering excellent sightlines and a modern appearance. The aluminium rafters are 40mm wide, making them only slightly slimmer than their timber counterparts.
Timber-Framed Lanterns: These lanterns sit flush to the inside face of the kerb upstand, creating a seamless internal appearance.
Aluminium Lanterns: These are generally fixed to the outside face of the kerb upstand.
Kerb Upstand: Regardless of the material, the kerb upstand itself is usually circa 100mm wide x 150mm high, unless the roof lantern is particularly large.
Arguably, both types of roof lantern look similar on the outside, as they are fully capped in aluminium for minimal maintenance and a cohesive appearance.
Timber-Framed: Our bespoke timber range allows customers to choose the overall size, shape, and roof pitch, with options for rectangular, square, octagonal, or lozenge-shaped kerbs.
Aluminium: We also offer bespoke aluminium lanterns in both the Urban and Hybrid designs, tailored to specific project needs.
Timber: While Sapele hardwood is highly durable, timber-framed lanterns require occasional repainting to maintain their pristine appearance.
Aluminium: Aluminium is virtually maintenance-free, requiring only occasional cleaning to remove dirt and debris.
Timber Lanterns: The most expensive option, due to the use of Class I hardwood, the highest category of timber, and traditional craftsmanship methods.
Aluminium Lanterns: More economical, as they are made using a mechanised, automated manufacturing process with an abundant, man-made material.

The choice between timber-framed and aluminium roof lanterns ultimately depends on your personal style preferences, budget, and the architectural character of your home. If you seek a timeless, classic look, timber is an excellent choice. If you prefer a modern, low-maintenance option, aluminium is the way to go.
